The IELTS Academic test evaluates your English language proficiency for academic settings, such as university admission or professional registration. You can take the exam on paper, on a computer at designated test centres.

Overview of the IELTS Academic Exam
The IELTS academic exam lasts 2 hours and 45 minutes, the same as the IELTS General Training test. It is primarily taken by individuals who:
- Plan to study at an undergraduate or postgraduate level abroad.
- Seek professional registration in an English-speaking country.
The test assesses four key language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. While the Listening and Speaking sections are identical in both IELTS Academic and General Training, the Reading and Writing sections differ in content and format.
Here’s a breakdown of each section:
IELTS Listening
The IELTS Listening Academic test has four sections with ten questions in each. The duration of this module is 30 minutes with additional 10 minutes to transfer your answers, if you are taking the paper-based exam.
The recordings are played only once, and you will encounter a variety of accents, including British, Australian, New Zealand, and North American. The answers appear in the same sequence as the information in the recording, meaning the answer to the first question comes before the second, and so on.
When completing the answer sheet, be mindful of spelling and grammar, as errors can lead to mark deductions.
IELTS Reading
The IELTS Academic Reading section includes three long texts extracted from books, journals, magazines, or newspapers which comprises around 2150–2750 words.
You will get 60 minutes to answer 40 questions in total for the IELTS Academic Reading. No extra time will be provided to transfer answers like in the Listening section. Every right answer is worth one mark. The text provided in this section can be narrative, descriptive, or discursive/ argumentative and might also have illustrations, graphs, and diagrams. A glossary with easy dictionary definition is given for any technical vocabulary used in the text.
IELTS Writing
There are two compulsory tasks in IELTS Writing of the IELTS Academic exam.
- IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic requires you to use your own words to describe a graph, table, chart, or other visual information. You have to write at least 150 words in 20 minutes for this task.
- In IELTS Writing Task 2, you will be given an essay topic to share your point of view, discuss an argument, or explain an issue and list solutions. For this, you have to write at least 250 words and have 40 minutes to complete it.
The answers should be written in complete sentences and not in bullets or notes. On the question paper, you are free to jot down notes; however, the examiner will not see them.
IELTS Speaking
The IELTS Speaking consists of a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner and is divided into three parts: introduction and interview, long turn, and discussion. It takes 11-14 minutes and assesses your ability to communicate effectively in English.
- IELTS Speaking Part 1: You will be asked a few questions, usually about yourself, your family and family history, your studies, or your interests.
- IELTS Speaking Part 2: The second part involves you talking about a particular topic after receiving a cue card. You must speak for up to two minutes on the topic after preparing for one minute.
- IELTS Speaking Part 3: The examiner asks further questions which are connected to the topic of Part 2.
IELTS Academic Scoring System
Each section of the IELTS Academic test is scored individually on a band scale of 0 to 9, and these scores are then averaged for the overall IELTS band score calculation. Here’s a detailed look at how each section is scored:
IELTS Academic Listening Band Score
- Number of Questions: 40
- Marks: 1 Mark Each
- Your final score in this section, which is out of 40, will either be converted to a full listening band score (… 5, 6, 7, 8…) or a half-band (… 5.5, 6.5, 7.5, 8.5…).

IELTS Academic Reading Band Score
- Number of Questions: 40
- Marks: 1 Mark Each
- The questions test a variety of reading skills such as, including reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding logical arguments, and recognizing writers’ opinions, attitudes, and purposes.
- Your raw score out of 40 is converted to the nine-band scale.

IELTS Academic Writing Band Score
- This section consists of two tasks and each task is assessed based on four criteria:
– Task Achievement for Task 2 (or Task Response for Task 1)
– Coherence and Cohesion

– Grammatical Range and Accuracy
- The combination of each score from these tasks will be used to calculate your overall IELTS band score.
IELTS Academic Speaking Band Score
- The speaking test is evaluated on the following four criteria:
- Fluency and Coherence
- Lexical Resource
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy
- Pronunciation
- It is scored on a scale of 0 to 9 for each section, with an overall band score ranging from 0 to 9. The scores are rounded to the nearest half-band.
Overall IELTS Academic Band Score
Your scores from the four sections are averaged to produce an overall band score. This score is rounded to the nearest half or whole band.
For example, if you score 6.5 in listening, 6.0 in reading, 6.5 in writing, and 7.0 in speaking, your overall band score would be (6.5 + 6.0 + 6.5 + 7.0) / 4 = 6.5.
Your final IELTS academic reading band score is presented as a band score, on a scale of 1 to 9.
